North Sails is an international company that manufactures sails and nautical clothing with operations in 29 countries. The company designs, builds, and manufactures sails for racing and cruising sailboats ranging from 8 feet (2.5 m) to over 200 feet (60 m) in length. They also manufacture clothing and windsurf sails. North Sails is the world's largest sailmaker, and North Sails' sails are used by most competitors in the Ocean Race and the America's Cup.
North Sails was founded in 1957 by Lowell North, an American sailor and Olympic medalist. North, an engineer by training, was a sea enthusiast who built his own boats to go sailing. In 2014, the company was acquired by the British investment group Oakley Capital, which took a majority stake in North Technology Group, the parent company of the US-based company, and subsequently North Sails Europe and North Sails, the licensed companies of the brand in Europe and New Zealand.
